When I was about 14, an older, supposedly wiser friend showed me the wonders of white eyeliner on the inner rim of the eye. And that’s about all of the makeup I wore for a couple of years, until I was old enough to realize this was a mistake. In high school, foundation, eyeshadow, mascara, powder and liquid eyeliner showed up on the scene. Since then, it’s been a lot of additions and not a lot of subtractions… until now.
I really do love makeup – I love the process of putting it on, and how you can create so many different looks with so few products. However as I’m getting older, I’m realizing that less might just be more for my beauty routine. I’ve taken to forgoing liquid eyeliner – a usual staple of my everyday beauty routine – and instead relying on my favorite shadow palette and a lovely mascara to add subtle brightness to my eyes. This switch made me feel pretty naked at first. I had been wearing it nearly daily since I started wearing makeup, and it definitely made me feel a little insecure. Did I look too tired? Were people wondering what was wrong with my face? The answer to both was no – no one cared or even noticed.
Sometimes it takes a little bit of self-awareness to realize that habit doesn’t need to stay habit. If you’re looking to lighten up your beauty routine for a more natural route, here are a few ideas to get started!
I fell in love with this a few months ago. It’s very light and sheer, but gives a little tint. It’s definitely pricey at $20 for 0.3 oz, and $60 for 1 oz, but I got a lot of use out of the small size. If you’re looking to save, Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream is under $10 and has a great light texture. I also use this to even out my under-eye area.
This is my go-to mascara because it’s very light, doesn’t flake and gives a nice natural lift to my lashes. I love that it doesn’t give too much excessive volume, which can feel heavy on the eyes.
Lip crayons give the perfect bit of color without being too caked on. I love how they feel smooth going on, and give long-lasting color after application. This is my favorite alternative to lipstick, which requires more upkeep.
I have this palette, and I couldn’t recommend it enough. There are so many colors that I never run out of different combinations. If you want to add a smoky eye, there’s blacks and dark grays that are perfect to do so. If you want a more natural look, the matte taupe and soft gold will do the trick.
I mentioned this product from my July Play! by Sephora box, but it’s worth mentioning again. I love how you can’t even feel it once it goes on, and the light liquid formula stays put all day long. It’s more of a stain than another layer on your skin!
Rather than a compact with tinted powder, a loose setting powder will minimize shine and leave skin feeling silky. It also helps set your “foundation” layer, keeping it in place longer.
