My last post on splurge-worthy items centered around the upcoming fall season, focusing on boots and outerwear that are absolutely necessary and great to spend a bit more on. This time around, I want to share those pieces that continue to be staples year-round, no matter what the occasion or the day.
I love the quote from Vivienne Westwood, “Buy less, choose well, make it last.” It’s such an inspiring concept, especially for someone like me who can’t pass up a good deal, though I love high-quality pieces. That’s why I am so infatuated with the idea of having less overall, but making the things you do have count. If you buy a $15 shirt and get to wear it ten times before it wears out it isn’t as good of a purchase as buying a $150 shirt and having it for years to come.
Your closet essentials, such as a black skirt or white blouse, tend to wear down more quickly due to overuse; that means your white button-down you got at H&M will get the job done for a while, but it isn’t built to last. Splurging on something that you know will stay in your closet for years to come will help you dress chicer and spend less on repeat items!
Full Black A-Line Skirt
Is there a more versatile piece? These are perfect for everything from an easy work outfit with a blouse and pumps, to a night out with the girls with a slinky tank. You can even dress it down with a tee, depending on the fabric. This skirt will stay in your closet for ages.
Skinny Jeans (That Fit Flawlessly)
If you buy cheap denim, it will wear out and stretch out after multiple washes. Spend a little more and get cotton with a bit of stretch, and make sure the hem hits about 2″ above the floor for a tailored look. Also make sure they fit around your waist without squeezing, and ensure that the legs aren’t uncomfortably tight, either. I like a darker wash with a bit of fade.
What can’t you pair this with? A great white button-down is amazing for layering in colder weather, but perfect with an easy skirt for summer days. Find one that fits well across the bust without puckering open between buttons, and keep the length to around your hip.
Black Pumps (That You Can Walk In)
Another piece that is absolutely vital to your wardrobe, and also will never, ever go out of style. Pick what you like best – pointy-toe or round-toe, leather or suede – and you can’t go wrong! This is an important buy for your professional wardrobe; making sure you have comfortable go-to pumps is always a good idea. Just make sure the heel is a good height for you for walking (everyone has a different threshold!).
